Author's notes: 1. This continues from last week’s Earth

1.

The path beneath Adam’s feet is sun-warmed stone, smooth and strong. It meanders past a stream and through a glade. It shifts, going soft and cool, sand at the edge of the surf, the sound of the ocean in his ears.

The air grows cool as the sun finally sinks below the horizon.

With each step, the path curves a little more to the left, slopes a little farther down until he is walking in near darkness- no lights, no moon, nothing to show where he’s going. Nothing but the twists and turns, the dips and drops under his feet.

2.

Hear ye the words of the Star Goddess; of the Antlered God; whose body encircles the universe.

Adam stumbles, feet slipping on the tiled floor, words echoing deep into his bones.
I who am

Longing fills Adam.

I who am

He’s trembling with exhaustion, hanging on every word whispered into his ear; one voice male, the other female, each reverberating until they’re a chorus of notes in his heart.

the beauty of the green earth

the echoing space between the stars, the depths of the endless sea

And the desire in the heart of all

3.

From me all things proceed, and unto me all things must return.

The words rebound, doubling, tripling until they are the only thing he can hear. Each word etches itself into his bones, rewriting the structure of his blood, calling out to the core of his very being.

“Please,” he whispers and is caught, held, in strong arms.

“I’ve got you,” a voice says against his ear. “I’ve always had you.”

“What do I- how-“

“Shhh,” the voice says. “Shhh. You are. You have. You always will.”

“I don’t-“

“I know. Just breathe.”

Adam sucks in a shaky breath.

4.

“That’s it. Keep breathing,” the voice says, it’s male and female, neither, and both. It’s everything, all-things, all-beings.

Adam clings to the warmth and strength surrounding him. His heart overflows, spills out into the void and refills.

“You are my child, my lover, my brother, my-self. Within you, I live and breathe. I dance on the surface of the world and soar through the heavens.” The deity strokes a hand through Adam’s hair.

Adam looks up into eyes filled with stars.

He lets himself touch the antlers crowning the god’s head and slide his fingers through the Goddess hair.

“Beautiful.”

5.

The one holding him smiles. “I am beautiful, in your eyes, in this moment. Another time, another place, I will seem terrible and ugly, cruel and capricious.”

The words form shapes, images of the divine in all his, her, their forms. The trickster skipping along a fence, the ruler seated on a throne, the guardian of the dead gathering souls. All the forms ripple through the space around them.

Adam watches the figures flow one into the other and the next, and he understands that he’s seen them all at one time or another.

“True, but you’ll still be beautiful.”

6.

“What happens now?” Adam asks, exhaustion dragging him towards sleep.

“You rest and dream and in the morning, you continue living.”

“Nothing changes?”

“Everything changes,” the deity replies, then smiles. “And nothing at all.”

“That doesn’t make any sense,” Adam says and even to his own ears he sounds petulant.

The deity laughs. “Of course not, where’s the fun in making sense?”

Adam snorts. “Now you sound like half my friends.”

The deity presses a soft kiss to Adam’s forehead. “That’s because I am.”

“Oh.” Adam’s eyes close against his will.

“Sleep.”

“Okay,” Adam mumbles, halfway there already.

“Welcome home.”
